About us

The Public Health Nursing team incorporate the principles of child safeguarding in everything we do, working in close alignment with other professional agencies to protect children and young people.

Where child protection/safeguarding concerns exist, we will engage with the Devon Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH). The MASH works with local authorities to safeguard children and young people.

When a professional, family member or member of the public is concerned about a child or young person’s welfare or safety, they can contact the hub so that the team there can look into the concerns. This is called making an enquiry.

What happens next?

On receipt of an enquiry, the MASH will review the information provided. If they consider the child or young person to have been harmed, or is at risk of being harmed, they will pass the information to the Devon County Council Social Worker Assessment team. They may also pass information to the police if they believe it is necessary to either help stop or solve a crime.

If the child or young person has not been harmed, but the team think they or their family would benefit from extra help, their information may be passed to the Early Response Service to explore options for additional support. The PHN team play an active role in working alongside the Early Response service in providing support to you and your child as part of this service.
